Orange Date Oatmeal: A Healthy Oatmeal Breakfast

Jump to Recipe Print Recipe

This Orange and Date Oatmeal is just what you want on a busy morning - and a healthy oatmeal breakfast is just what you need to get you through "those days"!!! Once you know how to make oats, breakfast is never more than 5 minutes away! For toppings, oranges and dates are a classic pairing and the almonds provided just enough crunch. With just a touch of honey and spice to marry all the flavors, this Orange and Date Oatmeal will definitely be part of my "porridge" rotation!

two bowls of Orange and Date Oatmeal

My grandmother had two favorite sayings - one was "ach Jimmy!!" (referring to my grandfather) and"Eat your porridge!" - which was always directed at me. Sadly, those bowls of porridge didn't resemble this Orange and Date Oatmeal...(sigh).
As the child and grandchild of Scottish immigrants, "porridge"  aka "oatmeal" was a fixture on my breakfast table growing up - and still is.
There are many reasons I love oatmeal - it's easy to make (once you know how to make oats), filling and oatmeal makes a very healthy breakfast!  Not to mention rolled oats are like a blank canvas - there are almost endless ingredients you can add to it - like the oranges and dates in this Orange and Date Oatmeal!
Inspired by my latest cookbook obsession - Plenty More - I've been thinking a lot about Mediterranean and Middle Eastern flavors. While perusing the produce department a pile of juicy oranges caught my attention. Dates somehow ended up in my cart, along with some sliced almonds. Thinking my bowl needed a little added sweetness, I grabbed some orange blossom honey.
Then headed back to the kitchen to start experimenting!

How to Make Oats!

Step #1: bring 2 parts liquid (water, milk or non-dairy milk) to a boil in a medium-sized saucepan. Add 1 part rolled oats and reduce to a simmer. Simmer, uncovered for approximately 5 minutes, stirring frequently. TIP: One serving equals ½  cup of oats. So to make one serving, you need ½ cup of oats plus 1 cup of liquid. Easy peasy!!!

You could also add cinnamon (like I did for this Orange and Date oatmeal) or vanilla, or pumpkin pie spice... pretty much whatever suits your fancy! In this case, oranges, dates and almonds... and a drizzle of honey!

I have oatmeal almost every morning with Del Monte cubed peaches and sometimes I add blueberries or bananas.
I also add sugar or sweetner and milk. However, your combination of fruit, spices and almonds sounds scrumptious!
