I know this isn’t my normal day to post.
But I had to.
To those of you who read a lot of food blogs you are probably seeing a lot of this Peanut Butter Pie and know the reasons behind it. To those who don’t, a brief explanation. Jennifer Perillo, a food blogger, writer and recipe developer recently lost her husband – the love of her life and the father of their two young daughters.
It was sudden and completely unexpected.
The food blog world was shocked and at a loss for words. A plea went out to Jennifer – “what can we do, and how can we help?”
Her answer may surprise you. She didn’t ask us to pray, or donate to a charity or simply to leave her alone.
Instead, she asked that we make her husband Mikey’s favorite pie – and share it with those we love.
Whuh.
In the midst of her and her daughter’s shock, grief and pain she was was comforting us – knowing that making and sharing food is the best comfort for those who love to cook and that “we” needed it.
I am in awe of such strength and grace in the face of such a loss.
And I am humbled.
And although I don’t know Jennifer and her family, there was no way I was not going to make this pie.
And now you know why I had to make this pie and write this post.
So, make this pie or whatever else it is that is special to those you love and share it with them.
Because when it comes right down to it, “now” is all we have… so make it count.
The recipe for this pie can be found on Jennifer Perillo’s blog – In Jenny’s Kitchen.

Your pie looks divine!
Thanks Diane – it is very rich but very good – just as my life is.

So sad, right? You inspired me to make this pie…it’s in the fridge when my kids take their first bite, I will have them tell me something they are grateful for! x
I think you will be glad you did – and I love that you will be having a discussion about gratitude! It’s so easy to get distracted by the annoyances of everyday and lose sight of all that we have…
Thank you for making the pie, sharing with us your experience, and letting us know that the pie was shared with loved ones. Wonderful.
Thank you too Brooke.. tonight I’ll be sharing the rest with friends… and thinking about how truly blessed I am!
Very sad – pie looks really delicious – extra hugs all round.

I know the feeling of “had to” as well. I was in the middle of a road trip and just stopped off and made a pie. Sometimes, you just have to make a pie and be a part of something greater than yourself : )
Nancy, what a wonderful pie you’ve created. And, it’s so nice to be able to part of this community with you. AS you say, when diving the hurt and pain, and sharing our love in times of crisis as well as celebration makes it all worthwhile.
Thanks for being part of my greater neighborhood!
