My oldest son Matt loves to fish. To be honest, he is obsessed with it.
So when Lucy of LadlesandJellyspoons posted the details of the Go fish LA event that she coordinates, I thought this would be the perfect “bon voyage” gift for him since Dallas, Texas is not known for it’s great ocean fishing. Ok, who am I kidding? Yes, I did think that he would enjoy this but to be perfectly honest I was pretty excited about the trip. Hmmm… hang out with some of the hottest LA/Las Vegas chefs and bloggers, eat fabulous food while out on the water all day? SIGN ME UP!!!
So of course, that is exactly what I did.
And so, last Thursday we were up bright and early… 4AM to be exact and headed to San Pedro.
Once aboard the Monte Carlo the fishing feasting began. Robert Schueller, from Melissa’s Produce kicked things off with a boxes of gorgeous fresh fruit which we happily munched on throughout the day.
And the food just kept coming.
The guys from The Grilled Cheese Truck grilled up some of their signature Mac n’ Cheese, Pulled Pork and Caramelized Onion Sandwiches followed by some Tri Tip Sliders. I truly wish I had a photo of these to share with you. My only excuse – I was so intent on tasting them that I polished them off before snapping a photo!
Keeping with the spirit of the day, Rick Moonen of RM Seafood in Las Vegas served up his signature Lobster Rolls. These alone are worth a trip to Vegas for – lucky for you though the recipe is included in Lucy’s book “Made in America” which is coming out in October and you can make these amazing rolls for yourself! Given how good the Lobster Rolls are, dining at RM Seafood is definitely worth a trip to Vegas… anyone up for a road trip????
Since we hadn’t had enough to eat yet, Chef David LeFevre of MB Post in Manhattan Beach brought out an Heirloom Tomato Salad with a lemon infused ricotta – be still my heart. These were some of the best tomatoes I have EVER had the the flavors… (sigh). After having this salad, I don’t think any fishing trip in the future will be possible without it. Period.
Not to be outdone Robert Danhi (chef and cookbook author) served up an Asian inspired Mango Salad and the most addictive peanuts ever – Spicy Coconut Peanuts.
And lest you think we were deprived in the sweet department, fear not. Chef Michael Cimarusti of Providence in Los Angeles brought cookies which my younger son Chris pronounced to be “the most awesome chocolate chip cookie ever – not too sweet and perfectly balanced”. I would have to agree. Needless to say, photos of these cookies suffered the same fate as the grilled cheese sandwiches… and I even brought a few home for my husband to eat. Shameful – but oh, so worth it!
We weren’t done yet though.
Amy Jurist of Amy’s Culinary Adventures began circulating with a caramelized pear and goat cheese bruschetta – with a floral garnish no less!!
Now that, ladies and gentlemen is a FISHING trip!!
And speaking of fishing, the fishing was not bad either – and on Thursday, I’ll be posting what I did with that fish!!
A huge thank you to Lucy for hosting and to Pamela of My Man’s Belly for keeping the one liners coming all day.
And to the chefs THANK YOU for the most amazing food I have ever had on a fishing trip!!!

JEALOUS. wish I could have spent the day with you. Next time for sure! xxx
Definitely!! After I am back from Dallas I am coming up to LA to visit you!!
This is such a lovely round up of the day – I will link to it from my pics – so much to post it doesn’t all fit right?! Thanks for coming and to your lovely boys for coming too.
Thanks Lucy for organizing such a great event – we had so much fun and the food was truly over the top!
What fun! Looks like a great time was had by all. Thanks for going and sharing with us your photos of your time on the boat! Yay!
Hi Brooke!! It was a great trip and a great time with my boys!
Sounds like so much fun. I hope to go some day.
You definitely should come Esi – the food and the company can’t be beat – catching fish is just a bonus!
Nancy, this fishing and feasting trip looks just as wonderful as I thought it would be! Must join you all some day
You’ll definitely have to come Marla – it is really, really fun!
This is not your father’s fishing trip, that’s for sure! Those were a little boat, an old man (well, you know, he was my Dad so he sure seemed OLD; he was probably 35!) and some stupid little fish.
Now this I could get into and it sounds like you had a wonderful time. Wishing you all the best in your transition when Matt goes off to school.
Thanks Barb!! Nope, definitely not my father’s fishing trip – his was the little boat variety as well!
Thanks – the transition is gonna be tough but I have all of you guys to keep me company!
This looks like so much fun! And a perfect thing to do with your boys. I bet they were in heaven.
They had a lot of fun… as did their mom!!
Nancy -So great to meet you that day! So fun to try all the yummy bites and spend a beautiful day with everyone! Glad you like my Caramelized Pear Crostinis!
It was great to meet you too Amy and the plating of your appetizers was amazing giving the pitching of the boat!
OMG…how cool is this. What a nice treat and send-off for your son, you’re such a fabulous mommy to do that for them. Fishing, food, fun and family…that’s where it’s at.
Well, he is a great kid! And you are right – a day fishing is a great time to spend with your kids because there aren’t many distractions – just you, the ocean and the fish!
What fun! And looks like the food alone is worth the trip
Looking forward to seeing what you cooked up with those beauties…great job your boys did there
The food was truly amazing and the boys definitely did a good job on the fishing front – love having free fish for dinner!
Looks like a great trip! If Matt loves to fish that much, he might be able to find some places around Dallas. There’s Lake Dallas. Not sure if you can fish there anymore.
With any luck he’ll be too busy STUDYING to fish!! LOL!! The one good thing is that the ocean is here – a definite “lure” to get him back to CA!
Thanks for the round-up, Nancy. I was sad I couldn’t attend but at least feel like I got an inside perspective from your post!
Sorry you weren’t there – you definitely will have to come on a future trip – it is so much fun!!
I’m so jealous of this trip. Looks like a lot of fun!
It was a blast! You’ll have to come on one!!
